Scan to BIM brought new hopes for AEC professionals
Nobody had thought that Architecture Engineering and
Construction industry will experience so much of technological advancements one
day. The conventional methods that were applied for construction involved too
many complications and there were no solutions for such things. AEC
professionals never used to be interested in renovation and retrofit projects
as it used to consume long time along with huge complications. Manual surveying
of the structure in question used to shake architects and engineers as it used
to be difficult to figure out where to start from.
But last few years have brought too many changes in
AEC industry as new technologies have been adopted by design and construction
professionals that can help them in project execution. Scan to BIM is one such
process wherein laser scanning technology has been introduced by design and
construction professionals which allows them to scan the building speedily.
Scan to BIM process is specially adopted for the simplification of
renovation and retrofit projects. In this process design and construction professionals
place sophisticated laser scanners near the as-built structure and through
laser beams on it for scanning it. In case the whole building is required to be
renovated then laser beams are directed on different portions of the building.
In this way multiple scans are collected by design and construction
professionals. Point cloud data is brought by the laser beams when they come
back to the hardware and these point clouds are stitched together by the team
accountable for surveying the building. This stitched point cloud data is
provided to the proficient technicians and modelers of a service providing
company who then carry out the further process.
When it comes to the service providing company, the
point cloud data first go through indexing process. Indexing is nothing but a
method of converting raw format data into right format files such as .rcp and
.rcs files. Both .rcp and .rcs files can be conveniently optimized by design
and construction professionals in their project.
Point cloud data helps AEC professionals in
developing accurate as-built models which are important to get clarity on
geometrical formation of the structure in question. With the reference of these
models renovation process becomes really uncomplicated.
