Scan to BIM process is procuring more and more popularity in AEC industry

Scan to BIM process is comparatively a very new concept and entrant in landscapes of construction industry. Great relief and comfort is experienced by AEC professionals when scan to BIM technology is adopted by them for executing retrofit and renovation projects. Execution of renovation and retrofit projects is contemplated as highly difficult and demanding by architects and engineers. That is because they have to dedicate huge time towards the scanning of as-built structure. Scanning as-built structures is not that convenient and easy for architects and engineers and that remains the main reason that they don’t feel comfortable when it comes to the execution of renovation projects.

In Scan to BIM process two highly crucial technologies are optimized by AEC professionals, which include laser scanning and BIM.  First laser scanning technology is used by them for thoroughly examining the as-built structure which enables them to obtain the building data in the form of point clouds. Point cloud data is captured with the assistance of laser beams which are effectively directed towards the as-built structure by the AEC professionals. Once these laser beams strike the as-built structure they penetrate inside it and capture building data in them. But this data only becomes accessible to AEC professionals when these beam strike back to the hardware.  As soon as laser beams return to the hardware point cloud data becomes available to construction professionals.

This scanned point cloud data is then transferred or delivered to design and construction professionals of service providing company who create as-built 3D BIM models out of it. With the assistance of this as-built model, modelers can also develop 3D BIM models for the structure that requires renovation. But models cannot be created instantly with point cloud data, modelers are required to index and scale it before they use it in their project. So once indexing and scaling is finished for scanned data, it can be optimized by BIM experts without any problem.

So as-built models and 3D  BIM models that are developed with the support and assistance of point cloud data help AEC professionals a lot in saving time and money requirements of renovation projects. That is why scan to BIM is gaining huge popularity among construction professionals.
