Importance of CAD and BIM technology in construction

The methodology that used to be applied by the AEC professionals in conventional construction process was full of complications and ambiguities. In the conventional construction process wherein both CAD and BIM technology were absent, entire construction activities used to be carried out on the basis of human skills and potential. That means there was a total absence of any kind of technology. This indicates that before the inception of CAD and BIM there was no possibility of developing digital drawings and models.

Manual drafting and modeling used to be full of human errors which used to result in tremendous amount of rework on the construction site. Implementing changes in manual drawings used to be the most difficult task for architects and engineers as they sometimes had to create an entire drawing from the scratch. Conventional construction process used to involve a lot of time for constructing a building.

But the inception of CAD technology and its acceptance by design and construction professionals have changed the entire picture of construction industry. CAD which stands for computer aided designs brought extreme revolution in drafting process which replaced manual drafting with high tech digital drafting. CAD software AutoCAD became an indispensable tool for drafters which allowed them to generate construction drawings quickly. AutoCAD assisted drafters to create immaculate drawings for architecture, structure and MEP which are then used by modelers in the digital modeling process.

One of the greatest benefits of digital drafting is that modifications can be implemented by drafters easily on the drawings. Due to their digital nature multiple changes can be made to them frequently by CAD drafters if required. Another important benefit of CAD drafting is that a proficient drafter can generate them with great speed and they can be provided to clients within stringent deadlines.

Invention of CAD technology was followed by BIM technology which largely transformed the working scenarios of AEC industry. BIM is an integrated process which helps in too many construction activities such as design development, construction planning, development of construction schedules and cost estimates etc. 

This truly indicates that both CAD and BIM are tremendously significant in construction.
