How important are structural shop drawings in structural design process?
When it comes to building industry structural design
requires huge technical expertise and deep knowledge of structural engineering
which includes technicalities involving load calculations. Structure is
constructed for reinforcing and supporting the building and hence it should be
capable of bearing the entire pressure and load that is thrust upon a building.
Life of a building is completely controlled by its structure, for example a
strong structure which is constructed by applying too many details can support
a building more than its expected life. On the other hand a building can
surprisingly collapse due to minor earthquakes and cyclones all because of weak
structure.
So attention to details remains at the heart of
structural designing process. Be it the detailing process wherein substantial
structural drawings are generated or be it the modeling process wherein 3D
model is created for representing structural design AEC professionals must be
careful about designing details.
Structural Shop Drawings that are generated by detailers during structural
detailing process are extremely quintessential part of design process. The
efficaciousness of the structure depends largely on structural drawings which
includes significant information about the structural components.
Structural shop drawings are created with extreme
attention by the detailers since these drawings are used by fabricators who
fabricate structural parts for the building. Detailers are not authorized to
generate the drawings until and unless clear and detailed specifications are
delivered to them. Both structural engineer and architect are accountable for
providing correct specifications to detailer who then creates detailed drawings
for structural parts. Detailers forward structural shop drawings created by
them to the structural engineer for inspection. It is a responsibility of
structural engineer to thoroughly examine the drawings provided by the
detailers and then provide relevant feedback to them. When corrections are
spotted by the engineer he makes appropriate note and sends it to the detailer
for rectification. Now it becomes the responsibility of the detailer to properly
go through feedback and then make the necessary modifications in the drawings.
In this way accurate structural shop drawings are
created by detailers, which are then used by fabricators.
