Scan to BIM services: An innovative approach towards renovation

When we are talking about scanned data it is nothing but the point cloud data that is obtained by implementing laser scanning technology. Laser scanning technology is basically utilized for scanning the as-built structures that are meant to be renovated. Scanning of the structures is done with the supports of laser beams which are emitted from laser scanners. For scanning as-built structures sometimes multiple scans are taken. The number of scans required to examine the building depends upon the level of details. If in case too many details are required regarding the as-built structure, multiple scans are taken by the clients from multiple angles.

Laser beams which are emitted from laser scanners for diagnosing the dimensions or geometry of the building reflect back to the hardware.  When they come back to the hardware they produce point cloud data. Multiple scans taken from different angles are then clubbed or integrated together.

The entire point cloud data is then handed over to engineering service providing company for creating 3D as-built models. When this scanned data is received by engineering service providing company, indexing and scaling is done for it. When the scanned data which is in raw format file is indexed, it is converted to point cloud file formats such as .rcp file and .rcs file format.

So for developing 3D models for the project in question, point cloud files are imported in .rcp file and .rcs file formats in Revit. Once these files are linked to the current Revit project they reflect the entire design of the as-built structure. So with the assistance of point cloud files, Revit users can get enough clarity on the design of the as-built structure. The clear understanding of dimensions and geometry helps BIM modelers in developing accurate as-built models.

When Renovation projects are executed with the assistance Scan to BIM services, building owners can save huge money and time. Money and time can be saved because laser scanning process helps in providing accurate data which assists architects and engineers in the fast completion of the renovation project. Since precise data is available to architects and engineers, there comes no such situation wherein rework can be faced by them while executing the project. No rework means no extra money is required for the project.
