Is Scan to BIM really helpful for renovation and retrofit projects?

Instead of promptly jumping into the benefits and helpfulness of  Scan to BIM in renovation, I would like to briefly talk about what it is really.  Scan to BIM in itself is a process that is implemented by AEC professionals for successfully carrying out renovation and retrofit projects. This process is undertaken by construction professionals to examine, inspect and survey the building in question for obtaining and acquiring information regarding its dimensions and geometry which is further used for developing virtual models. 

So the main focus of this process is to extract the information from the structure that is about to be renovated and use that data for developing 3D models. For obtaining the information or for examining the structure, laser scanning technology is administered or implemented by the project execution team which assists the team in quickly extracting the data.  So the first step that is undertaken by the team in regards to scanning the structure is to install high end laser scanners near the structure so that laser beams can be directed towards it conveniently. The purpose of directing laser beams towards the building is to survey the structure and when these rays come back to the hardware they accompany with them ‘Point cloud data.’

So it is this point cloud data that is full of building information which includes its dimensions as well as geometry and which is used by BIM experts of service providing company for developing 3D as-built model. This as-built model helps guides and supports BIM technicians in acquiring and gaining clarity regarding the composition of the building. It helps them in understanding the location of various building elements that are required to be dealt during renovation. So with the clear knowledge of every building element architects and engineers can successfully execute renovation projects and they can easily remain cautious in terms of demolishing the building parts. In other parts with the assistance of BIM model architects and engineers can easily tackle the main issue and leave the rest of the building without harming it.

Scan to BIM process helps in the reduction of project cost and time.
