What is the difference between structural detailing and structural analysis?
I am sure; some of you might be confused between
structural detailing and structural analysis. Well let me try to make clear the
concept of structural detailing and structural analysis. Both these process are
carried out for the purpose of creating highly effective structural framework.
Structural detailing services are required for developing accurate structural
shop drawings and erection drawings. For carrying out structural detailing services, detailers are required. Detailers are the people
who are trained in computer software and have a basic knowledge of engineering
principles. It’s an added advantage if a detailer has a considerable knowledge
of mathematics.
During detailing, computer software is used to
generate the drawings. But the important thing is that drawings should be
generated exactly according to the specifications of a structural engineer and
an architect.
Shop drawings developed by detailers consists of
assembly drawings and single part
drawings and these drawings are optimized by fabricators for developing
structural components such as columns, braces and handrail etc. So it is highly
important that, shop drawings are developed with high precision otherwise it
can create trouble for fabricators. On the other hand, erection drawings are
developed for the guidance and use of erectors.
However, structural analysis is the process which is
carried out by structural engineers for verifying the design of structural
framework of the building. So structural analysis can only be carried out after
the structural design is fully developed.
It is the process wherein a structure’s immunity in terms of its load
resistance power, is checked out by the structural engineer. Structure has to withstand
or repel the c load of the building as well as the load that comes from natural
forces such as earthquake, cyclone and wind etc.
It is also checkout that whether the structure is
designed as per structural design code and standards or not. If all the design criteria
are fulfilled while developing the design and if it is confirmed that it can
withstand all sorts of loads the design is finally validated which ends the
structural analysis process.
