The process of steel detailing in a snap shot

It requires a lot of thinking to design strong and quality structures. As far as we are concerned we are only bothered about our own safety and nothing else.  Structural designing is no joke and designing a structure which is strong and effective is even harder. That is the reason there is a huge team apart from the structural engineers who are involved in the development of powerful, strong and indestructible structures.

The process of steeldetailing: Steel detailing is a very crucial and necessary part of structural design process. The process starts with the rough sketches and specifications of the architects and the structural engineers. The architect sends his sketches to the structural engineers so that he can understand how the architect wants him to design the structural framework of the building to support his architectural design. Based on that the structural engineer designs the structural frame work of the building in question.



It is quite challenging for the structural engineer to develop a design which can fit properly to support the architectural design.  He then develops the most appropriate structural design and sends his instructions and specifications to the steel detailer.

Generation of structural drawings by the steel detailer: It’s the steel detailer who has to study in detail the architects’ as well as the structural engineer’sspecifications.A detailed analysis of specifications sent to the detailer helps him in understanding the entire design situation and he finally comes up with his own drawings.

Detailer’s drawings are sent for the approval:So we can say that steel detailing is the nothing but the development of the structural drawings which are known as structural shop drawings and erection drawings by the detailer. The shop drawings are used by the steel fabricators whereas the erection drawings are used by the steel erector during the time of the erection of the structure. Once these drawings are developed by the detailer they are delivered to the structural engineers for the approval and to understand if they are generated appropriately or not according to the speculations.

In case there are any issues with these drawings they are again sent back to the detailer for the modification along with the minor notes on them regarding the changes. The detailer looks into it and makes the necessary changes. After all the necessary modifications are drawings are finally approved by the structural engineers.


Summary:The process of steel detailing is quite a lengthy one. Steel detailing is the process of drawing generation by the steel detailer. A detailer is a very skilled person who generates the structural shop drawings and erection drawings after studying the specifications sent by the architects and the structural engineers.
